She Went Tiny... REAL TINY!
Tiny living is NOT for everyone. Personally, I think I could do it. I mean, these things are awesome! And the design needed to make them efficient... blows my mind!
Vina Lustado is extra cool to me. She's Filipino. And I'm Filipino! Well, I'm a half breed... but still. Vina lived a modest life in the Phillipines before finally settling in Ojai, California. Growing up the the Phillipines isn't easy for most Filipinos, it's hard to live a comfortable life there for most of the country is in poverty. Vina and her family were no exception. She was one of 9 children, just as my mom was, and has values of family over materials rooted deep in her soul.
After moving to the states, Vina had a hard time understanding the American dream... we work, we slave, we devote our lives to our jobs, just to support our lifestyles. A big house, nice things. But that is not what's most important to Vina. An easy, simplistic life, in a beautiful environment is what drives her. And she's created that life for herself, in the 140sqft tiny home of her dreams.
"Just because I'm tiny doesn't mean I can't go big!" says Vina.
Vina designed her tiny house to maximize efficiency. Her home, while it sits on a trailer & is light enough to be transported by truck, is south facing, taking advantage of the sunlight while minimizing direct heat gain. The exterior is constructed out of rot-resistant cedar, with the jams and corners perfectly mitered together. Vina utilizes a greywater system, using her runoff to bring her neighboring grapefruit tree back to life. But don't think she's having to forgo the finer things in life... Vina has a beautiful gas burning fire place, a huge porch that opens up to her great room, bringing the outside in and the inside out, and this is the BIGGEST kitchen she's ever had! Beat that!
